Nós só temos *dois dias para salvar milhões de hectares da Amazônia do
desmatamento e destruição*: está quinta-feira é o prazo final para o
Presidente Lula decidir se vai vetar alguns pontos da Medida Provisória que
irá privatizar partes da Amazônia pertencentes à União.

Duas semanas atrás a Avaaz enviou um alerta sobre a Medida Provisória (MP)
458 e mais de* 14.000 pessoas congestionaram as linhas telefônicas do
Gabinete Presidencial* pedindo o veto das partes mais perigosas da MP.
Dentro de *48 horas o Presidente declarou *publicamente que iria *vetar os
pontos criticados* pela campanha. Porém, desde então o Presidente tem
sofrido uma forte pressão da bancada ruralista do governo, fazendo
declarações preocupantes sobre o desenvolvimento da região Amazônica.

Nós temos menos de dois dias para persuadir o Presidente a manter a sua
palavra. Neste momento crítico em que o Lula está decidindo o que vetar, a
pressão popular poderá ter um papel decisivo para a proteção da

A Medida Provisória 458 não é toda ruim, ela foi concebida para proteger
pequenos agricultores que precisam do título legal das terras que ocupam.
Porém, a MP foi *manipulada pelos interesses do agronegócio*, muitos dos
quais são responsáveis pela ocupação violenta e ilegal de terras amazônicas.
Se a MP for assinada na sua forma atual, *os que mais tem serão os maiores
beneficiários* do programa do governo.

Nossas apelo para o Lula é:


1. Vetar a ocupação e exploração “indireta”, para que apenas as pessoas
que moram nas terras tenham suas propriedades regulamentadas
2. Vetar regularização para empresas privadas, somente pessoas físicas
devem ter direito à regularização
3. Proibir a comercialização das terras regularizadas por 10 anos, ao
invés dos propostos 3 anos, evitando assim a especulação comercial das
terras

provisions that would privatize public forest land.

The Provisional Measure 458 started out well-intentioned, as a way to
protect small farmers who need legal title to their land. Soon, however, it
was *manipulated by agrobusiness interests*, many of whom violently and
illegally have seized this land. *

If the bill is passed in its current form, the richest land owners will
benefit most. *

*We are asking Lula to do three things: *

1. Veto indirect occupation and exploitation, so that legal titles only
go to those who live on the land

2. Veto land titles for businesses so that only individuals are allowed
regulation of the land; and

3. Add a clause which prohibits the commercialization of regulated land
for 10 years, from the proposed 3 years, to avoid land speculation.
